With any game, be that gambling, sports or competitions, people are always finding new ways to beat the system or warp the figures in their favor. This is no different in roulette. Over the years countless have tried and these are some of the successful and unsuccessful techniques used by gamblers around the world.
The most effective methods of cheating require help from staff or personnel, usually referred to as an “inside job”. Dealers that are working in unison with betters can alter the outcome of games. Researchers have concluded that the most common form of this is dealers mastering how to throw the ball in such a way to predict in which sector of the wheel the ball will land. This requires a very experience roulette dealer but it is not unheard of. Although this does not guarantee where the ball will land it gives the better a much smaller group of numbers to bet on, increasing his chances against the house.

Players skills in the arts of sleight of hand can also use a technique called “Top-Hatting”. This usually also requires an inside job as the player has to quickly change his bet after the ball has landed. The player must have razor sharp, and lightning fast reactions to pull this off to not alert the other players or staff members not in on the cheat. Dealers are usually the accomplice here as they are the ones who keep a close eye on all bets on the table. Turning a blind eye, or distracting the other players for a second is all your accomplice needs. This is a highly risky technique and has only been mastered by a few well known cheats, most famously Francis Farrugia who cheated numerous high-stack casinos around the world.

Others try more crude measures to cheat in roulette. This includes trying to weigh down the table to tilt the wheel and effect where the ball will land. This is nearly impossible to do in present day casinos as the wheel is usually off limits for players to touch or interact with. However, a few years ago when casinos where not as lavish and modern as they are now, this was still a practiced method. It does not work anymore however.

Casinos are aware of these techniques and have put in numerous methods to stop cheaters, most commonly having multiple dealers or switching wheels if patterns are noticed. However if a casino even suspects that a player is cheating they will not hesitate to throw you out, or even worse alert the authorities.
