DePaul professor offers casino-goers tips

To the untrained eye, it might seem like gambling is purely a game of chance. Although players may feel like they’re at the mercy of the house, that doesn’t have to be the case. William Chin, a DePaul University mathematics professor, recently spoke with the Daily Herald about some tips that can help ensure roulette success.

The key, Chin says, is looking at the a casino with statistics in mind. There are certainly specific games where the odds are stacked against the players, but by choosing correctly and budgeting smartly, players have a much greater chances of walking away happy.

"I’m a mathematician, so I believe in luck you can predict ahead of time," Chin told the news source.

First and foremost, he stressed the importance of players not putting up money they can’t afford to lose. Outside of that, he says that reading up on strategies and game histories is a great place to familiarize oneself with the culture.

As for specific games to play, he says that blackjack, craps and video poker are the best for first-timers, and roulette may be more well-suited for experienced players.
