Massachusetts House passes gambling bill

Members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives recently overwhelmingly passed a measure allowing gambling in the commonwealth. The bill is now headed to the Senate and if passed will create three resort-style casinos across The Bay State, the Associated Press reports.

The passage could be a boon for the Massachusetts economy as it will encourage bidding starting at $85 million. Additionally, anybody who wins the licences will have to put in $500 million to the project which will provide jobs and an increase in revenue.

"Thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in a point in history for this commonwealth where economic conditions continue to be challenging, to say the least," Rep. Joseph Wagner, who helped pen the legislation, told the assembly, the AP reports.

Though the bill is a big step forward in making sure gambling enthusiasts have a safe, legal place to go, the United States still has a way to go when it comes to online casinos. Several states, including California, Nevada and New Jersey have all floated the idea about allowing online gambling, but nothing has come to fruition just yet.
